Ohhh this bathroom's makeover was a long time coming. It's a generous size, clean and non-offensive (I mean everything is beige!) But it needed a refresh (ok, a gut job!) Here are a few pictures to show you what I'm working with: Photos are courtesy of Andy & Paddy (our awesome realtors!) Did I mention it was ALL beige?! So the plan is to rip it all out. We're talking floor tile, tub, shower, toilet, vanity, everything! Here is an aerial schematic view of the room: Let me take you through it! When you walk in, to your right is a very large double vanity that is butted up to the window. To your left is a privacy wall that shields onlookers from the toilet. In one corner is a full shower and in the other is a jetted tub. To save some $$$, we're going to try and leave all ... [ Read More ]
I Heart Peelable Spray Paint!
Question: Do you decorate for every season? Or do you avoid decorating said seasons because of all the single-use junk you collect afterwards? I'm in the second boat. I typically don't decorate for each season like Easter, St. Patrick's Day, etc because of all the stuff I have to store afterwards. And throwing it out or giving it away feels like a waste on so many levels. But then I found this: a peelable (yup, PEELABLE!) primer spray paint! See those little bunnies? I picked them up from (you guessed it!) the dollar store. And while they are perfect for Easter which is coming up, I thought, couldn't I use them for Valentine's Day? Or for year-round decor? That's when this primer came into my life (Thank you Rustoleum!) The idea is you apply the primer, then apply your spray ... [ Read More ]
DIY White Board (a.k.a. Dry Erase Board)!
This little pantry in our kitchen is used ALL. THE. TIME. It houses soup, pasta, sauces, snacks, you name it. But the outside of the door was looking a little haggard thanks to our resident artist (who's almost 4) and her sticker prowess. Since she loves using that space as an art wall (I can see how she views it as a big white empty canvas), I decided to turn the whole thing into a white board! Here's what I'm starting with, along with the real life mess inside of it! (It desperately needs organizing...) Here are the materials I used (affiliate links are provided): White board wall sticker White board markers/eraser 3M Command Strips IKEA Fiskbo frames (in a variety of sizes) Now for my PSA of the day: take extra care to measure people!!! I'm a math-y and ... [ Read More ]
Design Plan – Nursery No More!
Have you recovered from SuperBowl mania? I'm not a huge fan but the bit with JT and Prince was pretty impressive! While everyone was analyzing passes and plays, I was planning out the swapping out of our little girl's nursery for a big girl room! She's turning 4 (FOUR!!) in May and it's about time!! The reason this plan took so long was because I thought we'd be a new home by now but that didn't work out. So onto plan B - finish designing the rooms I intended on working on in the first place! Thanks to our fabulous realtors Paddy & Andy, here's a picture to show you what the room looks like now (in its cleanest state!): What you can't see is a dresser on the other side of the room that acted as a change table when she was a baby (something we haven't used in years). And ... [ Read More ]
A Coffee Table that’s Kid-Friendly!
When I first designed our living room space, it was pre-child so thoughts of toy storage were not on my radar. Nor were thoughts on durability. Or the possibility of abstract art being on pretty much every surface of the room. But then I got pregnant and I had to start thinking about it! With some luck, the coffee table solution we came up with works for little energetic souls and adults alike. Here’s what it looks like: It's basically two cubes each with their own storage ottomans! Each ottoman holds a whack load of toys and they also serve as footstools for anyone needing a little leg stretch. And with two cubes, you can share! Now this is not a new IKEA hack but it's a useful one! Each cube was made from an IKEA hack of the LACK side table (we bought them in glossy ... [ Read More ]
Monthly Feature: Design Finds at Amazon!
Now I'm a little late with my monthly treasure hunt but I have a good one for you - this month I'm featuring Amazon.ca! I've been OBSESSED with their prime shipping lately (I buy toilet paper, toys, paper towels, craft goodies...you name it!) but what I don't think most people know is that Amazon actually carries amazing home goods. And they deliver them. Right to your door. Need some examples? (Affiliate links have been provided) You know I'm having a love affair lately with Eiffel barstools and these black ones are no exception. This rug is so beautiful, I would use it as wallpaper if I could. Wall decals are traditionally known for adding a little kiddie flair to kids rooms but this one acts as a large work of art! You NEED to see the price on this triangle ... [ Read More ]
Tile Options that DON’T need Grout!
This week I wanted to talk about tile! (I can hear half of you groan and half of you get excited at the prospect of tiling something) ;) We're in the midst of figuring out our backsplash for our laundry area and while we'll be tiling the floor with a large scale tile that would largely be covered by the washer and dryer, the backsplash is a place in this space where I can add in the pretty! As I started my search, I discovered some alternatives to standard tile. Alternatives that would save a ton of time and effort - I'm talking peel and stick people! There are two types of this tile that I found that I'm keen to try out: Aspect Peel and Stick Tiles. I recently received a shipment of these tiles to try and I picked a glass mosaic tile called "Rustic Clay". Photo courtesy of ... [ Read More ]
DIY Fall Wreath Idea!
This DIY fall wreath idea is inspired by my 3 year old. She loves the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", which tells the story of how the letters of the alphabet tease each other up a coconut tree. When the tree becomes top-heavy, that's when it lowers it's boom and the letters all jumble to the ground - her favourite part! I was looking for a wreath idea for our front door, and as I'm reading this story to my little one, that's when the idea came - a letter-inspired fall wreath! But not your typical monogram wreath. Here are the materials I used: Wreath Forms (Mine were made of straw and varied in size) Wooden Letters Paint Paint Brushes (or Sponge Brushes like above) Ribbon Hot Glue Gun I decided to use three wreath forms in different sizes as I find a door can ... Monthly Feature: Design Finds at Zone Maison!
This month I'm featuring a unique shop called "Zone Maison" that is located about 5 minutes away from where I live. It's tiny but it houses so much! You're able to order a plethora of design pieces in store but it also has a great online shop too which is one of the reasons I'm featuring it this month as I know some of you don't live in Ottawa (although you really should consider it) ;) With these types of feature posts, you know the drill! I'm not paid in any way to endorse the store or its wares, I just like to shop! Here are my top picks: A cuckoo clock - who doesn't love a cuckoo clock?! This one is modern, clean-lined and adorable. Coat racks can be used in so many different ways - in the front hall as an actual coat rack, in a bedroom as a temporary clothing ... [ Read More ]
Storage Solutions for Small Spaces!
Some people have asked me why my design blog features storage/organizational solutions and crafty things. It's a good question! Here's my take on good design - it goes hand-in-hand with having good organizational solutions for the space that you're designing. And sometimes you have to get creative with how to organize all the things which brings out the crafty side of me! So there you have it - that's why my motto is: Design, Organize, Create! Take these plywood boxes I found at the dollar store: In our guest room/office, I needed some space to house the little things: paper clips, post-it notes etc. When I found these plain plywood boxes, I thought they'd look really great stacked and mounted in an area right by the desk that's out of the way - but they needed a little ...
