How was your weekend? Here in Canada it was a long one and while it was low-key, we got a LOT of stuff done and had some fun in between! (I'm fearing the amount of coffee I'll need to brave work tomorrow...) This month I'm featuring another shop that I don't think is thought of often for home decor items: Chapters/Indigo. They started out as a book store but they have diversified - big time! I'm talking furniture folks! Here are some of my picks this month: All photos courtesy of Chapters/Indigo This umbrella stand is probably the chicest one I've ever seen and it's only $60! I adore this blanket ladder. It could either be used as such or just as a decorative piece, it's that pretty! I'm featuring 3 pillow covers this month because they are just too cute - the pattern, ... [ Read More ]
Monthly Feature: Design Finds at H&M!
H&M. You probably know them as the German-born well-priced trendy clothing store that finally made its way to Canada but they now sell home goods that you can order online! (My credit card was excited by that news). While I titled this post as "design finds" I'll be focusing on something I'm currently in need of lately and this place has a lot of lovely ideas for it: STORAGE! Here are a few that caught my eye: All photos courtesy of H&M This straw basket will corral your kids' toys, books, whatever needs storing in a chic and natural-looking way. I think H&M actually shows it being used as a plant holder! I have a 3 year old so some cute items are bound to pop up. And this little bunny covered dish is no exception. I can see it being used to house my ... [ Read More ]
Five Easy Ways to Upgrade your Home on a Budget!
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Ours is still going strong thanks to Canada's 150th birthday! (Now to get my birthday declared a national holiday...) ;) Recently I was asked to pen my thoughts on how to upgrade your home on a budget so let's get to it! Here are my top 5 ways to get'er done without having to empty out your bank account: 1) Paint: This is by far, the easiest, most effective and budget friendly way to up the chic factor in your home without breaking the bank. I recently participated in the "One Room Challenge" this spring and I worked on transforming our powder room from blah and ordinary to a more modern look. The paint alone (and my inexpensive wallpaper find!) made all the difference! 2) De-cluttering/Organizing: De-cluttering is a cheap and easy way ... [ Read More ]
Happy 150th Canada Day Blog Hop!
Guess who's turning 150 on July 1st?! The lovely Lucy from Craftberry Bush organized a fabulous Canadian blog hop tour in honour of Canada's special day and I'm honoured to be a part of it! I am a very proud Canadian, born and raised in Canada's capital (Ottawa NOT Toronto folks!) and to get into the spirit of this very special Canada Day, I incorporated a little Canadiana into our décor! We have a little balcony off of the master bedroom that we often use in warmer temperatures to read, chat and chill from a busy day. So when it was nice enough to bring out some outdoor furniture into the space, I couldn't help but Canada-it-up! Here's my blank canvas (yes those are Christmas lights - gah!): And here it is with a little Canadian oomph! Are you surprised I ... [ Read More ]
Monthly Feature: Design Finds at Simons!
Well the weather in Ottawa is pitiful. Rain and clouds have been plaguing us so I haven't been able to show you my patio area which I've been dying to set up. But it allowed me to start up my plan of doing a monthly post devoted to passing along my design finds from a shop I'm currently crushing on. This month it's Simons! (Note: I am NOT paid to endorse the store or any of its items, I just love shopping and they have some amazing things, some of which I couldn't pass up!) Simons (which has been around since 1840) is a one-stop clothing and home decor shop that hosts some pretty lovely (and practical!) home goods. Below are my top picks! All photos courtesy of Simons. Sweater Knit Basket: Anyone who knows me knows that I love a good basket. And this is one of them. Baskets ... [ Read More ]
Design DIY – Products that will make your life easier!
Dear HomeRight, I love your DIY products. Yours, Lidia See this bathroom vent? It lives in our powder room that we just re-did. It was originally white but it had started to yellow and with my new black ceiling, that wouldn't jive. The fan itself was in good shape so I figured I'd give spray painting the cover of the fan a shot. Enter these products: Small spray tent shelter Turn table Have you heard of HomeRight? They sell really smart DIY tools and when I was approached to try two of their products, I jumped as they were exactly what I needed for this type of thing. So with an open mind, (and a can of black spray paint in hand), I open up the small spray tent shelter on our back deck, I put in the painting turn table and I started to spray (but not ... Design DIY: How to refinish marble floors without ripping them out!
Remember the ORC ("One Room Challenge") I recently did? (Of course you do since I've been yim-yammering about it for weeks!) In the rush of getting it all done, I didn't have a chance to tell you what I did with the floor since replacing it was my last option. Here's what it looked like before: It's supposed to be a shiny black marble tiled floor but we don't think the marble was ever sealed properly (or I used a way-too-harsh cleaner on the floor which killed all the luster and shine). There was an uneven haze as well along with really dingy coloured grout! So I started hunting for possible ways to refinish the floor without having to replace it (Time was a factor!) First up was addressing the grout lines. In comes this grout paint which we picked up in "Snow White": Photo ... [ Read More ]
ORC – Spring 2017 Edition – Source List!
I'm pooped. My body is yelling at me, the house is a mess but I'm so happy to have one more room in our house that's done! This challenge also helped me prove to myself that I can paint, wallpaper, refinish floors, etc. although I don't think DIY-ing on a timeline is my thing. At least not on a regular basis. Maybe come October I'll be up for it again. It could be equated to being in labour - you forget the pain afterwards and enjoy the beautiful baby that came because of it! Good Lord I'm tired... I promised a source list so here we go! Going into this challenge I knew that this powder room wasn't going to be a huge overhaul since we weren't switching out the vanity, toilet or flooring. Low-budget was what I was thinking. That being said I grabbed a few amazing deals which exceeded my ... [ Read More ]
ORC – Spring 2017 Edition – Week 6! (THE REVEAL!!!)
Welcome back to the Spring 2017 edition of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda and House Beautiful! (If you're new here, welcome!) Ok. This. was. hard. I was away for a couple of weeks, I was sidelined with some crappy virus for another week, there were flooded basements in the mix...but...IT'S DONE!!!!!!!! There are still bits to be finalized and I'll have a whole host of tutorials and sources for you in the next little while (this post would be a million words long if I crammed it all in) so for this post, let's get down to the good stuff - the "before" and "after" pictures!!! Here was my design board for the space: The idea was to turn this space into something calm and serene. After all, isn't the bathroom a quiet little escape for most people? (Wait, I'm making it ... ORC – Spring 2017 Edition – Week 4!
Oh I'm so happy you're here as I've actually made some headway in the ORC!! Thank you to Linda from "Calling it Home" for creating this challenge as it has kicked my rear-end into high gear and I'm getting excited about this powder finally being done! So the last couple of weeks were slooowww for me in terms of doing anything for this space. But today I'm proud to tell you that the painting is is pretty much done! The wallpapering will be this week's venture (I miss my specialist - JM, I'm looking at you!) and John and I are working on a neat little vanity update that I'll have for you next week! So why am I this excited??? It's because the crappy stuff (for me!) is DONE!!! Here are a few phone pictures to show you! This is me trying to get out of the shot while showing you ... [ Read More ]
