To my Canadian friends and family, Happy Thanksgiving!!! While today's post was going to be about a tutorial I had worked on, my little one became sick over the weekend so today I wanted to focus on being grateful - it is Thanksgiving after all! So while this weekend didn't go quite how we planned, we still gathered to celebrate the occasion which is something we need to do more often. (Do you feel that way too?) Life always seems to get too busy but I love getting together with friends and family and catching up. And in a world that, in my opinion, has gone bat-crap-crazy lately, I think an appreciation of the people you heart the most should be relished. It's all too easy to take for granted! Not too long ago my mother had quite a few surgeries where I thought, "that's it, we're ... [ Read More ]
BlogPodium 2017 Recap – I miss you already!
BlogPodium. It's a Canadian blogger conference that occurs in Toronto for one day only and if you're a blogger, veteran or new, you MUST attend. Jennifer Flores from "Rambling Renovators" is the lovely organizer who, with a host of other wonderful people, put this whole conference together which was no small feat. Between the venue, the sponsors, the food, the giveaways, the networking, I'm exhausted at thinking how I would tackle this all! Good thing is I don't have to thanks to that fabulous team! Why did I love it so much? Community. Nothing beats getting a big group of people together that talk your talk, are warm, generous, and just plain fun to be around. You won't have to apologize for talking blog all day long, they love jamming about it as much as you do! Networking. ... [ Read More ]
DIY Fall Wreath Idea!
This DIY fall wreath idea is inspired by my 3 year old. She loves the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", which tells the story of how the letters of the alphabet tease each other up a coconut tree. When the tree becomes top-heavy, that's when it lowers it's boom and the letters all jumble to the ground - her favourite part! I was looking for a wreath idea for our front door, and as I'm reading this story to my little one, that's when the idea came - a letter-inspired fall wreath! But not your typical monogram wreath. Here are the materials I used: Wreath Forms (Mine were made of straw and varied in size) Wooden Letters Paint Paint Brushes (or Sponge Brushes like above) Ribbon Hot Glue Gun I decided to use three wreath forms in different sizes as I find a door can ... Monthly Feature: Design Finds at Zone Maison!
This month I'm featuring a unique shop called "Zone Maison" that is located about 5 minutes away from where I live. It's tiny but it houses so much! You're able to order a plethora of design pieces in store but it also has a great online shop too which is one of the reasons I'm featuring it this month as I know some of you don't live in Ottawa (although you really should consider it) ;) With these types of feature posts, you know the drill! I'm not paid in any way to endorse the store or its wares, I just like to shop! Here are my top picks: A cuckoo clock - who doesn't love a cuckoo clock?! This one is modern, clean-lined and adorable. Coat racks can be used in so many different ways - in the front hall as an actual coat rack, in a bedroom as a temporary clothing ... [ Read More ]
Customize Back-to-School Supplies!
As summer is dwindling and kids are slowly trickling back into schools, stores still have mounds of school supplies on-hand for those last minute shoppers. When I saw what was left (and I overheard a little boy disappointed that some pencils he wanted were sold out) I thought about customizing school supplies - it can be done, right?! Enter these generic school supply items from favourite dollar store: Plain Jane, right?! But I had a plan! Here were my materials: Wrapping Paper Mod Podge Clear Contact Paper Scissors I started with the pencils. I cut a piece of wrapping paper to the size of the pencil and then adhered that to a larger piece of contact paper: I trimmed the ends and began rolling the contact paper/wrapping paper combo onto the pencil. And ... [ Read More ]
Storage Solutions for Small Spaces!
Some people have asked me why my design blog features storage/organizational solutions and crafty things. It's a good question! Here's my take on good design - it goes hand-in-hand with having good organizational solutions for the space that you're designing. And sometimes you have to get creative with how to organize all the things which brings out the crafty side of me! So there you have it - that's why my motto is: Design, Organize, Create! Take these plywood boxes I found at the dollar store: In our guest room/office, I needed some space to house the little things: paper clips, post-it notes etc. When I found these plain plywood boxes, I thought they'd look really great stacked and mounted in an area right by the desk that's out of the way - but they needed a little ... Quick Organizing Tip if you have Stairs!
Do you live in a home with multiple levels? We have three in ours and while it provides a great exercise routine (ha!), I don't enjoy having to lug an armful of stuff up three flights only to have dropped something in between. Enter this organizing beauty: It's a bin I found at Michaels for 80% off - 80% OFF!!! Here are the tags in case you're interested in finding the same ones: I bought the two that they had and placed them on the stools at our front entrance (which happens to be at the bottom of staircase #1). While helping me keep my main level organized (every time I think of something that needs to go upstairs, I drop them in one of these bins), I found that they hold quite a bit! And they have greatly helped me tote the important things: Well, important ... [ Read More ]
Monthly Feature: Design Finds at Chapters!
How was your weekend? Here in Canada it was a long one and while it was low-key, we got a LOT of stuff done and had some fun in between! (I'm fearing the amount of coffee I'll need to brave work tomorrow...) This month I'm featuring another shop that I don't think is thought of often for home decor items: Chapters/Indigo. They started out as a book store but they have diversified - big time! I'm talking furniture folks! Here are some of my picks this month: All photos courtesy of Chapters/Indigo This umbrella stand is probably the chicest one I've ever seen and it's only $60! I adore this blanket ladder. It could either be used as such or just as a decorative piece, it's that pretty! I'm featuring 3 pillow covers this month because they are just too cute - the pattern, ... [ Read More ]
I lived, I laughed, I loved – Haven Conference 2017 Recap!
WARNING: The quality of the photos below do NOT reflect the photos generally posted on this blog - they better not or I'm in trouble. My crazy expensive camera stayed home and given my flying woes, thank God it did! Oh, and if you see a very happy girl with glasses in the pictures below, don't be alarmed, that's just me. I was very tired and giddy ;) Have you heard of Haven? It's a blogger conference held in Atlanta every summer for the last 6 years and it's organized by these lovely ladies: Rhoda/Chris/Traci/Kristen Last year was my first Haven and I went when my blog was only 4 days old - I think other bloggers thought I was nuts! But I never once regretted going being so new to the game. I learned an incredible amount and built wonderful relationships so with that, I didn't ... [ Read More ]
Monthly Feature: Design Finds at H&M!
H&M. You probably know them as the German-born well-priced trendy clothing store that finally made its way to Canada but they now sell home goods that you can order online! (My credit card was excited by that news). While I titled this post as "design finds" I'll be focusing on something I'm currently in need of lately and this place has a lot of lovely ideas for it: STORAGE! Here are a few that caught my eye: All photos courtesy of H&M This straw basket will corral your kids' toys, books, whatever needs storing in a chic and natural-looking way. I think H&M actually shows it being used as a plant holder! I have a 3 year old so some cute items are bound to pop up. And this little bunny covered dish is no exception. I can see it being used to house my ... [ Read More ]
