We’ve already received our first snowflakes here in Ottawa which puts me even more in the mood (if that’s even possible) for my favorite holiday season, Christmas! We’re in week 2 of our “Deck the Home” blog hop where we’ll be sharing a themed Christmas post for the next 5 weeks! Last week’s theme was “Door Decor” and I came up with a non-traditional (and cozy!) wreath for our front door. This week’s Christmas them is “Wood”! I’ve shared my project below and on Wednesday I’ll be featuring one of my fave projects from the week. Oh, and be sure to check out all of the creative talent in the link-up below – personally I can’t wait to try out some of their projects!
My project this week is about using an unexpected item as a Christmas gift tag – specifically wooden leaves!
Materials
- Small flat wooden object (in my case, leaves that I found at the dollar store!)
- Paint (I used Decoart’s Black Paint to act as chalk paint)
- Sponge brushes
- Chalk pens or Markers
Step 1 – Paint your Wooden Gift Tags!
Simple enough, right?! I quickly painted both sides of each leaf until I got the rich black finish I was looking for.
Step 2 – Label your Gift Tag
Take your chalk pen or marker and label your freshly painted (but dry!) gift tag.
Step 3 – Attach your Gift Tag to your Package!
Arrange your newly personalized gift tags and attach them to your package. I like to tuck them under enormous fabric bows 😉
What I love about using wooden objects as gift tags is that they are 100% reusable and recyclable! The person receiving your gift can simply paint over them and re-use the gift tag, or they can be used as ornaments, or they can be re-purposed for another craft project! And the prettiness factor of these little wooden gift tags should not be overlooked 😉

And don’t forget to check in with me on Wednesday when I’ll be featuring one of my favorite door decor projects that are linked above!
