Yup, you read that right. I found, what I believe to be THE best reusable grocery bag that I’m actually consistently using. And loving!
My Inspiration
The idea came from the most recent issue of “Storage” magazine:
See those beautiful bucket bags down there? The editors suggested using them as an alternative to standard grocery bags and grocery bag alternatives. They’re sturdier, they have a flat bottom and they tote shaped so you could really use them for any type of shopping, not just groceries. I also love how cleanable they are.
They come in at $20 US a piece at the Container Store, and while I’m sure they’re worth that price, I wasn’t sure I wanted to invest in a bunch until I knew whether or not this system would be for me. But then I found these beauties at $4 each!
Grocery Test Run!
The investment for 8 of them came to a grand total of $36 (including tax!) and I figured that wasn’t a huge price to pay to see how this system would hold up in our home!
So I cleaned out our trunk, threw in the 8 bins and tested this method out with a few trips to the grocery store!
The Results?
I’m now a convert! These plastic dollar store bins are actually beach totes meant to carry sand toys and anything wet and beachy! (Side note, is “beachy” a word?!) But I have found them to be the perfect reusable grocery bag.
They are:
- Durable
- Washable (think hose people!)
- Lightweight
- Colourful
- Inexpensive!
Originally people looked at me funny when I brought these bins in to our local grocery store to pack my groceries. But then I got a few nods of approval. And then I received a few questions about where I got them! (That’s my favourite part about blogging – introducing people to something new or unique!)
They also lend themselves well to further organization if you’re keen enough! You could assign a basket colour to each type of grocery item you buy (like bread, meat, dairy, fruit) and if they’re not too heavy, you can enlist your kiddos to help out!
As much as I’d like to list a con to this system, I don’t see ANY! Have I convinced you yet?! 😉

I’m still ashamed to say I buy the plastic bags every week. I just can’t remember to bring my reusable bags! I love this idea though

Hey I totally get that! I leave mine in the car so that I’ll always remember them!

Wow!! I just love the color of these bags. I am using reusable bags for 5 years. As you mentioned above it is less expensive, easy to carry and most importantly it is eco-friendly. Love to read your all articles. Thanks a lot!
