Gifts! With Christmas exactly one month away, I think gifts are on everyone’s mind! I was challenged to come up with a DIY Christmas gift and mine was inspired by the “Magnolia” line “Hearth and Hand” from Target.
My Inspiration
My inspiration struck when my daughter and I were flipping through my latest issue of HGTV magazine one morning. I saw this image and thought, hey, I could do something like that!

Materials
- Pre-cut pieces of craft wood (I got mine at Michaels)
- Ornaments or Decorative pieces like pinecones
- Gorilla Glue
- Paint
- Paint Sponges or Brushes
Step 1: Paint and Glue your Craft Wood Pieces
I kept the gold inspiration going and painted each wood piece with a couple of coats of gold paint. Then I took, what I call, my miracle glue and drew a very fine line of glue onto one of the pieces of wood. Place the other piece of wood on top, hold it for a few seconds and let it all dry. Within an hour, you’ll have a solid bookend to decorate!
Step 2: Add in your Embellishments
Originally I was going to replicate the inspiration image and use large pine cones. But when I dipped them in the gold paint, they rapidly became much smaller and the “petals” closed. I had thought to add in clusters of pine cones but then more inspiration struck: why not pop off the top of a Christmas ornament and use it as a vase? So that’s what I did!
Step 3: Style it!
If you’re giving this as a gift, styling it beforehand and sending your gift recipient a picture can give them inspiration on how to display it!
The material costs for this was ridiculously low. We’re talking about $6 per set of bookends. And that’s for all the materials!
